There are always warning signs when one accidentally traipse unto unknown and potentially dangerous territories.
For me, it came in the form of concerned onlookers coming up to me and whispering in my ears that Boy has a long term girlfriend already.
You are probably thinking that I must be up to no good to have these nice people come up and warn me to keep my paws to myself. The thing is, my paws never left the jug of vodka something-something I was cradling all night (sorry my Queen!) and the only morally-questionable act I did last night was allowing the (very drunk and very gay) birthday boy to perform a public lap dance on me. So my point is, all paws in pocket, me and Boy were just talking.
I conclude that they must be concern that I am some naive ingenue who will get sucked in by his sweet nothings, fall head over heels in love and foolishly embark on a tragic unrequited love affair with Boy. I do really appreciate their kind warning but at the same time I cannot help but be annoyed by the Post-it “Don’t be a home-breaker, ok?” reminders they are sticking on my forehead.
How about reminding HIM instead that he has a girlfriend? Long term or otherwise.
It was as if they already knew that he has a propensity to be naughty and have given up hopes of him behaving. So they decided to shift the duty of care to me and make me wear the cheat police hat instead.
This hat does not sit well on my head.
So I did what I think is the most practical thing to do in the circumstances. I turn to Boy and ask him the exact same question I’m asking now:
“Eh, why are these nice people coming up to me to remind me you have a long term girlfriend?”
[Blank look]
Duty of care shifted over :)
