As the woman on stage screeched out that song, I had one paw over my mouth to stifle my giggles and the other paw digging into the Toe’s arm. (I do this whenever I am stressed with laughter. I pity my companions.)
It didn’t help that throughout the show, they were displaying a variety of cheesy backdrops on a 4-panel screen. For “soft romantic” songs, there are fluffy clouds, spring flowers blooming, etc. For sad songs about pining after lovers who have gone away, there are white winter scenes, rain drops pitter pattering, etc. And for those critical moments when love turns to anger, there are blazing fire or exploding fireworks. For other miscellaneous songs, there are simply swirly neon lights. I swear they were all taken from Microsoft Windows screen savers. Again, I dug my claws into Toe’s flesh to stop myself from dying of laughter.
That said, there are a couple of songs which were delivered really well such as “Tell me on a Sunday" and “Music of the Night”. I also somewhat enjoyed watching the 2 videos of Andrew Lloyd Webber talking about his music, though I was laughing again because I thought he looked like the Rat Man from Harry Potter.
In the second video, Mr Webber spoke about how he hates it when people go up to him and start belting out the prelude to the “Phantom of the Opera” in his face… and the orchestra immediately played the prelude (of course) and that 'opened' his most popular song that night. The woman who sang Christine’s part (the same one who screeched Love Never Dies) did a better job this time and we were all very impressed with her high notes ~ although comically, she FLOPPED onto the floor after her last high note, presumably to demonstrate the drama-ness of the song. I collapsed in my chair, laughing.
I really need to grow up and watch hardworking performances with more decorum. We drank a lot of wine (before, during and after) to maintain composure.
In short, I had a pretty good time. Thank you Mr Webber, and sorry for the nail marks, Toe!
The ticket shows $0 because we got upgraded to better seats - thanks MBS! Sory we weren't better behaved but we did spend a lot of money on your alcohol during intermission... |

yes, they did 1 song from whistle down the wind ~ and frankly, I thought it was awful. Or maybe it was the willows and swaying weeds in the background! hah! anyway, its not worth the while!
