Singapore Boleh Juga!

Last night, during dinner with my alibaba friends, I was told that army trucks in Singapore are not allowed to make a right turn on the roads.

This ban supposedly came about due to a very unfortunate incident where a dufus young recruit accidentally drove a massive army truck over a stationery car while executing a right turn. His excuse was that he didn’t check the right side of the road before turning because he was listening out for instructions from his commander who was sitting on *ahem* his left. (Note: Driver seat is on the right side in Singapore.) A father and son were sitting in the stationery car when that happened. In remorse and to ensure that it doesn’t happen again, the Army impose a blanket ban on all military trucks from making right turns from then on.

The question remains: if an army truck need to make a right turn, how do they go about then? Apparently, they have to do it the roundabout way – by making numerous left turns until they reach their destination!

I tried googling “Singapore+army trucks+making right turns” today to find out whether this is really true, but nothing shows up. Anyway, according to Toe, that army truck story is probably true if you cite the chewing gum ban as precedent.

You see, apparently the chewing gum ban started also because a dufus young man (an Ang Moh this time). He was riding in a MRT and decided to dispose his used chewing gum by sticking it on the MRT door. This caused the door to jam up and it took hours to pry it open hence causing unacceptable delays. After that incident, the Sing-Jia-Por Gah-Men imposed a blanket nationwide ban on chewing gum as a lesson - the lesson being, chewers cannot be trusted to dispose their used gums responsibly and errant disposal is likely to cause havoc to the nation’s otherwise super-timely public transportation schedules.

Can also!
