It may be a bullshit celebration to many but I am a big fan even though I'm not usually a romantic or sappy person. You might say we should celebrate love everyday and not just on 14th February but to be fair, this date is symbolic - after all, St.Valentine did not die everyday!
Or so I have read, St. Valentine is a Roman priest who served during the third century in Rome. At that time, the Emporer decreed that all young men are banned from marriage because he feels that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families. Valentine, feeling sorry for these soldiers, defied the Emperor and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret (how noble!) and was put to death on 14th February. Valentine Day is therefore in commemoration of his selfless act in the name of love.
And I believe that is what love is all about - it is a mere word unless and until someone comes along and gives it meaning. If you don't share or express your love in some way, technically it doesn't exist - or rather, the ones you love can't benefit from it.
With that in mind, despite the HEADACHE making reservations (the whole nation is having dinner out tonight and all restaurants are all imposing compulsory and expensive set dinners - GRR!), I have organized a group Valentine Dinner tonight to celebrate with my beloved friends - the singles, married, gay, whatever. Thank goodness The Man didn't mind that I choose to celebrate Valentine Day with my friends instead of just him. Or perhaps he is glad to be off the hook from bringing me out for expensive romantic dinner - which is a moot point really because even when we did try to do romantic V-day last year, we ended up at Carl's Jr. and we had lover burgers. (The burger wasn't actually called love burgers, we name it as such - aww...sickening lover's talk!)
I did tell the Man, however, that while he can forget about everything else, he cannot forget to send the obligatory flowers to my office. This is really shallow but you see, I have worked in an office all my life and this is something I observed from typical office culture: If you are female, not receiving flowers delivered to your office on V-day is something you cannot be proud about. (Ouch! I can feel the proverbial rocks thrown at me now!) Must maintain a bit of face lah... :)
Anyway, forgetting the flowers and dinners and what not, I hope everyone enjoy their V-day today in whatever manner you choose to celebrate or not celebrate. Just remember to share the love!
XOXO, Frou
