I couldn’t say no when Dailytoe invited me join her and her colleagues at Zouk's Mambo night last Wednesday.
I could have said EWWWW or GROSSS or NO WAY! I AM TOO OLD - like any other (pretend) self-righteous person over the age of 30 would automatically respond - but truth of the matter is, I neither find Mambo ewww or gross, and I’m hell bent that my fountain of youth is still bubbling happily.
So I went, and the first thing I said to Toe and the other teachers when we congregate at Wine Bar to get drunk first, is: “Who is going to do synchronize mambo dancing with me?”
The English Teacher blahhhh at me. The Angmoh Teacher laughed. The PE teacher say she don’t know the moves. The gay Primary School Teacher snorted. The Alibaba Teacher aka. Dailytoe just ignored me and continue drinking.
About an hour later, all of us found ourselves standing in a circle at Zouk – synchronize dancing to Rick Astley.
That's right, we let the alcohol do the walking by then. We didn’t know the mambo moves so we watched and learned from this old uncle wearing a bright blue tee that says MAMBO JAMBO. He was really going at it at lightning speed – executing all the moves expertly and with much vigor. We are convinced he is the Mambo King.
Here is how you dance to the chorus of “Never Gonna Give You Up”:
Never gonna give you up (Swoosh both your arms upwards)
Never gonna let you down (Swoosh both your arms downwards)
Never gonna run around (Create circles in the air using one finger)
….. and desert you (change your circling finger into a thumbs up, swing it quickly to the right. Turn your head the same way, and give a gwai lan “I’m heartless and going to desert you” face)
Never gonna make you cry (Look sad, rotate clenched fists up and down next to your respective eyes)
Never gonna say goodbye (Wave your hand)
Never gonna tell a lie (Cross your fingers in front of your mouth)
……and hurt you (Pretend you’re stabbing your heart with a knife)
If you are still finding it hard to imagine how that looks like, I found a youtube video of how it is done PROFESSIONALLY.
