I have just received an invite to a housewarming party with a very disturbing sign-off: "Feel free to bring your significant other, and/or Dailytoe, or other friends if you like."
What a covert line! Is he implying that:
1. "Significant other" and/or "Dailytoe" or "other friends" - are 3 distinct groups of people, ranked in ascending order of importance in my life?
2. The "and" portion of "and/or" means if I bring a "significant other", I can still technically bring Dailytoe along - provided the two actually get along.
3. The "or" portion of "and/or" means if I do bring a "significant other", I wouldn't bring Dailytoe along because they obviously won't get along *tsk tsk* (stop fighting over me folks!)
4. And the more implicit meaning of the "or" portion is - Dailytoe IS THE "significant other" !!!!!
*Faints*
By the way, does "significant other" mean the second "other" thing I deem most "significant" in this world besides myself? Like chastity? world peace? money? Er... alcohol?
Think I'll probably bring a bottle of champagne....... and Dailytoe will surely follow (the bottle, not me.)

wah lau! why you think so 'deep' one?!! maybe the sender of the invite purposely one. hehehehe.
to prevent u from thinking so much...would u say the correct way to draft it would be:
"Feel free to bring one of the following:
a) Your significant other;
b) Dailytoe;
c) Your significant other AND Dailytoe; or
d) 1 or more other friends other than those persons mentioned in (a) and (b).
"
Take me along! Me me me! I will follow you! *bursts into song*
Did I ever tell you... High on a hill was a lonely goatherd?
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo!
My friend, you're the only person I know who would happily yodel in public therefor I am honoured to be your Significant Other.
Erm... we go where ar?
Hahha imp, now I am slightly embaressed to be so lawyerish abt this! yes, i would have preferred if he had set it out like your example. Or rather, if he didn't use the words "significant other" - it is so anti-single!!!
DT - stop making me yodel on the rocks!
