I read in the Straits Times today that China is banning people who are obese (anyone with a Body Mass Index of above 40) , single or above 50 from adopting Chinese children. No explaination was given as to why these categories of people are disqualified.
While it may be understandable why single and old people could not offer effective parenting - but why obesed people? I try seeking answers from my peers:
K says
Er, Govt. want people to lose weight?
*z o e y* says:
They fear that the chidren gets crushed by accident. I'm so fat that i sat on my kid and i thought it was a wedgie!
Drama Boy says:
Cause they obviously couldn't take care of themselves. And more then that, they'll tend to eat their children's food portions too.
I wonder can they work on losing weight after they are deemed uneligible? Marie France would have a field day if they opened a counter next to the adoption office!
something about mary says:
Maybe the Chinese Govt think that fat people will kick the bucket earlier?
Phil says:
Obese ppl may eat their adopted child. It should be a worldwide ban. Have u seen the eyes of a really fat person when he/she's hungry? It's really evil. Malicious.
pokwei says:
They might black out from food overdose and pass out on the children under their care, causing permanent damage (if the head is affected)or death from suffocation
Datin says:
Higher chances of obese, not fat, people to die early.......and they are usually emotionally unstable
froufrou says:
Erm...why are they emotionally unstable?
Datin says:
Emotional coz fat mar. No confidence and all. Darling...when u're obese..ur confidence will diminish u know. We're humans.

Dragor says:
So that they won't pass on their habits to the kids and we end up having more obese people running around?
The Queen says:
Being extremely fat shows that you lack responsibility and respect for yourself. If you do not have respect nor responsibility, how can you be responsible for another human being?
Crazy as it may be, there are some element of truth in most of the statements above (Phil excluding). Yes, a person's size definitely does not hamper a person's inherent ability to be a good parent. However, obesity is perceived as a disease (social, mental, physical or otherwise)which may lead to many health and psycological problems. It's the habits and side-effects of this disease that may diminish an obese's person ability to be good role models for children under their care.
