To Eat Or Not To Eat

The other day, someone wrote on Facebook that we should commemorate our love and respect for animals by being vegan for the day. She also add that if we can’t be vegan that day, we should choose another day to practice this mindfulness for living beings – and that she herself is a vegan once a week.

I read it a couple of times and my mind still drew a blank. HUH??!

When I am faced with seemingly “deep” messages like these which I cannot decipher, I often consult my very clever Secretary Pig who understands the ways of this (kok) world better than I do. So I wrote Secretary Pig an email asking her, “Pig, can you explain to me how does being vegan for a day (or even once a week) help save animals of the world?”

Secretary Pig wrote back:  "It doesn't. It just makes the person feel better that he/she is doing something. Whether you eat the pig on Mon, Tue, Wed etc...the pig still died, hello! Besides, if you dun finish eating the pig and the meat rot then how?? Even worse, the pig died for nothing! Moral of the story (as I've always maintained): Dun let a good pig go to waste!"

(She is very clever, ain’t she?)

My point is, if one is truly passionate about the cause, wouldn't one stop eating meat altogether? Or even plants. They are “living beings” too. I think I read somewhere that some people can hear trees screaming when you cut them down.

Anyway, like my esteemed secretary said, if you are still going to eat the pig anyway, then it is better to think about wastage instead. That’s why I applaud places like Josie Bones, a “nose to tail” dining joint in Melbourne. No part of the pig is wasted.

SP, let’s go there some day. My treat!

By the way, that's a dead carcass of a rabbit, not a pig. I've asked them.

it's a slippery slope. don't go into these discussions. there's no end. then you might as well turn vegan, and then turn to only eat synthetic food or protein for sustenance. while you're at it, also don't use leather and stuff like that. one mega headache. eat as you will. :D just don't overeat!

you're absolutely right. The best is just to do it for your own personal reasons (and not try to shove your personal beliefs down other ppl's throats while at it!)
