I was selected to attend a workshop to feedback on the suitability of a staff training program prior to roll-out.
So, we were discussing a particularly taxing piece on the geographical reach of the company’s business when I raise my hand and ask:
“I note that there is no explanation on the various business models of this company. Why do you assume that participants have prior knowledge?”
The facilitator flinched:
“We do not want to insult the participant’s intelligence and appear condescending by putting out such trite information”
I flinched:
“But the participants are staffs from across the various functions who may not have access to such knowledge in their diverse roles.”
Indignant facilitator:
“It is our presumption that it is the employee’s responsibility, as members of the organization, to know”.
Indignant me:
“My mother say presumptions are dangerous”
(Stony silence).
WHOOPS!!!
